eBay to $ell $kype !
Sep 1st

So the new kid on the block called Skype is no longer stellar ? Buyers are Siler Lake VCs for a $1,9 billion package (65% of shares).
eBay couldn’t eventually find a realy synergy for Skype and it’s core e-commerce bussiness.
Does it mean that the 405 millions Skype users don’t need to talk about sales or bids ? Well, maybe not at eBay’s. While shopping, talking takes longer time than browsing a few categories to find the right item you want and set i.e. an auto-bid.
Time is also the missing ressource for power sellers that don’t want to invest on videos about their goods, if not mandatory. The truth is they sell anyway !
The open questions are :
- which business will now want Skype as an inhouse feature ?
- can Skype diversify, I mean, really ?
General Motors + eBay = WTF ?
Aug 10th

Tomorrow august 11th is the first day of a brand new official GM venture with eBay. Can you believe it ? This perfectly shows how deep fellows from GM went lost during past weeks and months.
GM was already cleaning stock thru eBay, but this time the deal runs under bright light. California will be the first area to ‘enjoy’ the astounding. Marketers from GM certainly paid a fortune several nternet gurus to get to that point. Gurus may have said : hey GM guys, you desperately need fat margins right ? So forget about starving population and talk to power incomes. Talk to California ! Yeeeee ! And as gurus know everything, they advised to reach the silicon audience via one popular big gun : e-Bay. What an unprecedented marketing plan….! I should start my own little guru business !
And now here they are, I mean GM fellows, so excited that they believe this will be rocket sales !
However, life’s simple. You buy things you can afford because you need them (ie food) or because you just can resist, yes you crazy fool (ie iPhones). So where do you place GM ? Need ? Desire ? None ? e-distribution won’t change the answer.
Instead of saying ‘where could we sell our shit’, they should have asked themselves about ‘do we need to rethink our shit’ ?
The answer to that last question could definitely bring rocket sales.
