The Truth about the Motorola Droid / Milestone !

motorola droid 450 2 The Truth about the Motorola Droid / Milestone !
You don’t have one yet but you’re about to ?
Here are a few things you might want to know, taken from a daily usage.

The good things.

The screen. A really OMG! one. Sharp resolution, most of the websites show perfectly in landscape with no need of horizontal scroll. 98% of the touch speed of an iPhone provides that same cool & natural touch experience.

The apps. Despite a shorter catalogue than Apple’s app store, Android market is loaded with the major titles, and a smooth install process. Plus you can run tons of them with push infos to make your Droid bip-bip-bip permanently ! Beware of the battery ! ;-)

The rock solid. The Droid feels like iron. Don’t need to hold your breath while using it like with the iPhone, praying not to scratch it. Here you really can forget about it and just let your hands behave over it. No worries.

The camera. Lots of people said this one was pure crap. No, it’s not. With the double led flash even inside shots will look just fine. And under sun light, both pics and video are pretty similar to what you can get with any other 5Mpix camera. As the best camera is always the one you carry with you, this one won’t disappoint.

The Voice. Much better phone than the iPhone.

The GPS. Droid’s GPS chip is really accurate compared to the “you’re more or less here” iPhone’s precision. Same when used on turn-by-turn. With an iPhone, simply forget about it. ;-)

The physical keyboard. Despite not the best you’ll ever seen, it’s there when you need more than 140 quick caracters to express yourself. It’s like for cameras, the best phys keyb is the one you carry with you !

The bad things.

The Weight. Yes, with 165 g, the Droid is an anvil capable of pulling down your pants when you have it in your pocket ! :-) This is of course the counterpart of the above mentionned solid finish. Everything is brutal when talking about the physics of the Droid.  Especially the vibrator… it doesn’t vibrate, it earthquakes ! :-)

The “On” button. You can only wake-up the Droid from stand-by mode by pushing the tiny “on” button from the upper right of the screen, or by sliding the physical keyboard. Why is it a problem ? Because in both cases you’ll need 2 hands to do so. Any other touchscreen phone can wake up from a touch of a single hand finger… C’mon Motorola, your engineers all have 3 hands ??

The battery life. I know, all smartphones share this issue. But the Droid barely will remain your alive friend for a day. Of course, if you forget about push, auto-sync, GPS, and 3G, it lasts like a normal phone. But then, why pick it ?

The heat. Thinking about surfing the web over 3G ? Think about it twice. The Droid turns really hot. And by hot, I mean it’s like Rome in flames ! Great heat source in the blizzard though.

The bottom line.
These are the day-to-day user +/- aspects of the Motorola Droid (Milestone in EU). All in all, this piece of mobile tech is not bad at all. Android is still in its early stages. Huge potential here if updates are in the pipe. So it’s up to you ! :-)
