Twitter is supposed to be the killer of old media (news networks).
How ?
By speed.
People can tweet anything as it happens. In realtime.
That’s why some say old media can’t beat that speed, and thus are already dead.
This is absolutely true if you consider that “speed of information” is the only thing you need.
But then, you’ll miss half of the joy. We certainly need to know what happens when it happens, but we also need to understand how and why it happens.
Twitter provides you instant info but not verified nor analyzed. Why ? Because those 2 tasks (verify and analyze), cost money boy, and a little bit more than 140 caracters, even repeated.
Anyone can Tweet that Michael Jackson is dead. Only specialists can deliver accurate details and explain what happened, why, and the coming consequences of it.
Can Twitter crowd afford that ?
Nope. No budget or skills there to do so.
Talking breaking news, Twitter can only pretend to be one of the many ignition sources. Not more.
And that’s true for about 2% of the stories. Because if you check the common trending Twitter topics, 98% of the time it’s about topics generated by “old media” or brands, just amplified/confirmed by Twitter.
Welcome back to a reality where Twitter won’t change that much your information world. ;-)
