Google announced today a few things about it’s forthcoming open source OS : Chrome OS.
Chrome OS is Linux based (Debian) and ment to be above all the instant on OS. 7 seconds boot time, which meaning that you’ll never have to wait again for ages until the OS allows you to use your PC. Chrome OS will only be made of web tabbed applications. No native apps to install locally. The advantage is of course speed, permanent auto-updates, and better security with easier virus-spy-spam tracking.
Everything will be stored in the cloud, and encrypted in your local drive. Means il you lose your PC, you don’t loose any data. This is certainly the most exciting side of Chrome OS. Until a major cloud crash with massive data loss ! ;-) I believe data will never be safe and backup will remain a basic gym of any PC user.
Last thing to notice is that Chrome OS won’t be downloadable. It’ll come built-in with several notebooks from different manufacturers. A little bit the Apple way where Google also wants to control the hardware to be sure it delivers the promise.
All this joy will hit stores next 2010 fall ! See you there, to figure out if Google will succeed where Linux so far failed ! ;-)
