Rumors rumors… this one is about Apple to kill Atom processors support with the next OSX 10.6.2 release. This would mean that your sweet little netbook running a hacked version of OSX wouldn’t survive after the update.
Fact or fiction ?
As time (and market share) goes by, Apple becomes a more and more closed ecosystem. They sweat dream to have 100% control over what they make. But is such statement possible ? At least technically ? I’m not sure. How can you impede reverse engineering ? A closed code doesn’t mean it’s closed for everyone. Furthermore, having your code cracked is nowadays a neat sign of success. Like it or not.
The question behind is : are the OSX netbook fanboys a threat to OSX, and Macs, sales ?
If you succeed installing OSX on a netbook, you know how this task is limited to a savvy range of people. It’s not – yet – as easy as ‘press play’. This means that if you do it, it’s because you really like OSX, even if you don’t pay for it. It means thus that you’re an excellent OSX evangelist to your social network. And for that service, Apple doesn’t pay you neither, despite they get the word of mouth benefit.
See ? Apple can’t kill that win-win state of things without losing something in terms of brand image. And brand image is what makes Apple.
Easy. You can relax and enjoy your hackintosh, with updates !;-)
