Today at best we enjoy HDTV, also called full HD or 1080p with images made of 1920×1080 pixels. This means 2,1 megapixel per image.
Imagine now an image resolution of 7680×4320 pixels (33,2 megapixel). That’s Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV), and the main features were just defined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU, a tech division of the United Nations).
The 2012 London Olympics will be broadcasted in UHDTV in selected spots as an experiment. The quality of the image is so sharp, that your brain believes what you see is for real. It’s a game changer in the way we consume TV, with a new level of emotional impact.
We’ll have to wait until around 2020 to have such a monster in our living room at a decent price.
